L.R. Mckinney

Mom, Author, Artist, Photographer and Law Enforcement Sergeant.
In that order!

It all started after I got out of the U.S. Army and started a family.

One day, while watching Power Rangers with my kids, I caught myself wondering why so much of fantasy and science fiction seemed determined to ignore reality. I mean, sure, we're talking about giant robots and people in colorful spandex, but does everything have to defy the laws of physics?

That little question started something.

I began dreaming up a world where fantasy could be extraordinary without being completely implausible. Where the impossible might just be possible, provided you understood enough about how the universe worked. I wanted to bring a sense of realism to fantasy without turning every adventure into a physics lecture.

So I started writing down my dreams, researching strange ideas, and designing creatures, civilizations, and technologies that could exist with as little abuse of the laws of physics as possible.

That was back in 2004. My daughter was two, my son was one, and I had just turned eight for the third time.

And somewhere in all that madness, The Chronicles of the Reborn came into existence.

Twenty-something years later, I'm still building it.

I was born in 1979, which means I'm currently enjoying the delusionally youthful age of 47. I'm slowly coming to terms with this unfortunate development.

Over the years, I've collected a rather ridiculous assortment of skills and interests. If you're curious about my hobbies, they mostly revolve around physics, engineering, creative design, and collecting boogers. (Just making sure you're still paying attention.)

These days, I work in law enforcement. Before that, I was a professional photographer, a career I genuinely loved until COVID took us out.

I also have a two-year college degree that took me eight years to earn. It's a long story. There may have been distractions. Possibly squirrels. We don't talk about it.

I currently call the frightening state of Florida home, although if you've got closet space and decent air conditioning, I'm open to negotiations.

Now, there's something you should probably understand about me.

I'm an author. Not a writer.

There's a difference. At least in my head.

I'm not particularly interested in all the technical fuss that comes with writing. I'm interested in creating worlds. Dreaming up things that don't exist, figuring out how they could exist, and then finding out what happens when I throw a bunch of them together.

I'm a dreamer. An inventor. A researcher. And, by any reasonable standard, a bit of a weirdo. (A huge bit.)

So, if you happen to discover a typo in one of my stories, congratulations! Have a cookie. You're clearly smarter than me.

As for a few random facts about the person behind all this: I'm LGBT, six feet tall, and mommy said I have an IQ of 122. None of which has prevented me from spending an embarrassing amount of time looking for my glasses while they're sitting on my head.

But I suppose that's part of the fun.

I never really set out to become an author. I just had an idea that wouldn't leave me alone, then another, and another.

While I’d rather spend all my time creating things, I do promise to read emails. I may even reply to a few. So please, feel free to use the Contact Us link at the bottom of the website!
